We gathered our meager possessions, taking stock of what was lost to that unreachable lake bed, and made camp. Thankfully, it was only a few possessions, and no lives. A good fire, to dry our clothes and cook what the forest provided.
Campfires, at once a sign of hope, of relaxation, of light against the dark, and yet also a tiny bubble of apprehension against the overwhelming unknown. Best not to think about the monster in the lake, or any unknown, lest they overwhelm your thoughts. Just sit by the fire, and be warm and safe.
