Melchiori "Montanaro" Sidro Rosso di Mela e Murtillo (8% ABV, 500ml). For this strong cider, the Trentino-based company (established in 1994) adds 15% blueberry juice to 85% cider sourced from local apples. No sweeteners, no colourings, all the fruits are certified organic.
The blueberry gives this cider a dark ruby colour, with a tiny pink head. The aroma features red wine flavours, Almost like those of a primitivo, with only a side note of tart apples and hints of toffee. Medium body, moderate carbonation. In contrast, on the palate the two principal fruits act together for a sweet-and-sour, lightly bitter and earthy taste. The finish has sourish blueberry notes mostly, with some acidity and mild bitterness. Aftertaste of tart apples, and fruit skins, with the alcohol being more noticeable.
While I'm not a huge fan of mixed fruits ciders per se (many are just artificially engineered alcopops), I can't deny the power and elegance of this one. Very good indeed (8.5/10).
