Melchiori Zingy Sidro di Mela e Zenzera (4.5% ABV, 500ml). The cidery in Trentino adds 1% fresh ginger to 99% organic apple juice from fruit harvested from the region.
Colour is pale yellow golden with greenish inflections, clear. A small head is gone quickly. Winey notes dominate the aroma, with a side note of ginger, some grass, mild yeast. Light to medium body, moderate carbonation. On the palate, the ginger comes through right away, adding a note of sharpness to white wine flavours, herbs, grass and tart, sour-ish apples. The ginger is lingering on into the sour, acidic finish and adds a herbal, sharp note to the frizzante-like aftertaste.
I was afraid that it might taste like ginger marmalade in England (which I detest) does, all floral and perfume-y notes. But not so: Rather, it's a sharp, herbal note that it adds to the taste. Unusual, but not unpleasant. 6.5/10.
