This is my 1000th cider rating on Cider Expert, and I saved something a little special for this milestone; certainly the most expensive cider I have ever bought! Everything about this (the bottle, the marbled wax seal, the slender cork, and the crisp, clean packaging), shouts elegance! Christian Barthomeuf of Saragnat is the man credited with having the idea, 30 years ago in 1989, of adapting the techniques used to make ice wines to cider. After much experimentation, he refined his technique, and introduced the world to ice cider. Cloudy, dark bronze in colour, with a pungent aroma of treacle, liquorice, pine resin, and bruised apple. Thick and syrupy, with tangy apple tones, molasses, and dark Greek honey, and a resinous finish. Served lightly chilled, this is a digestif, with powerful, intense, and complex flavours, made for sipping by a log fire, with the snow falling thick outside.
