La Chouette Original Cidre (4.5% ABV, 330ml). Located in the picturesque, famous Baie du Mont-Saint-Michel in Normandy, La Chouette ciders are made from 100% organically grown apples, and the varieties in this blend can include sweet, bittersweet, sharp and bittersharp apples. No sugar or other additives in this one.
The "Original" cider displays a clear, reddish amber colour in the glass, with a small white head. Candied apples, yeast, some lemony sourness and light floral notes in the nose. Medium body, light carbonation. Initial taste is sweet candied apple, apple skins, and lemon. Stronger tannins towards the finish, plus yeast and apple cores, with autumn leaves, some sugar, and again yeast in the aftertaste. While there's lively bitterness, too, the overall impression is one of sweet apples. So: Drink this while it's cold! But the sweetness feels totally natural, and the stuff is eminently quaffable. The German term would be "süffig". If you don't have a sweet tooth, you might not like it. A shame it comes in such small bottles. 8/10
