Lime Magarita from Brickworks Ciderhouse Part of a new and limited Mix Pack, Brickworks experimented with two unlikely flavors. Classics in their own right, margarita and cider, not sure why it was necessary to combine them. The uber sourness overwhelmes any sweetness from the cider. Go back to the drawing board! Frome Valley Dry Cider from Henney's Cider Company A solid, approachable cider with good flavor and balance—but it falls short of a true dry cider experience. Right off the nose, you get classic orchard notes—fresh apple, a bit of honey, and sometimes a light floral or slightly earthy edge. On the palate, it starts noticeably fruity and mildly sweet, then transitions into a tart, tannic finish with a crisp bite. If you’re expecting something sharp and bone-dry, you might be disappointed. If you want something crisp, slightly sweet, and easygoing, it hits the mark nicely. If I could, I would rate it a 3,5/5. Flare (newer 4.6% version previously 4.9%) from Pulpt Flare tries to position itself as a “balanced and easy-going modern cider, but it ends up feeling a bit underwhelming. On the plus side, it has a pleasant apple aroma and a clean, lightly sparkling profile that makes it easy to drink. There’s a mild sweetness with a hint of fruitiness, and it’s not overly harsh or overly dry, which some casual cider drinkers might appreciate. Unfortunately, that’s also where the issues start. The flavour is fairly weak and lacks depth—nothing really stands out or develops as you drink it. It comes across as thin, with low carbonation and not much acidity or bitterness to give it structure. The result is a cider that feels a bit bland and forgettable rather than refreshing or characterful. The aftertaste has a slight fruity tang, but it doesn’t linger in a satisfying way, and overall it feels like it’s missing both punch and personality. Drinkable, but uninspiring. On the first sip, the “poundcake” note isn’t immediately obvious. The entry drinks crisp and dry, led by bright acidity and the nuanced character you’d expect from heritage apple varieties—structured, slightly tannic, and complex rather than sweet or dessert-like. If you’re expecting bakery-level richness up front, it can feel subtle at first. But give it a moment. As it opens up in the glass and lingers on the palate, the Madagascar vanilla begins to bloom. The aroma grows warmer and rounder, weaving through the apple’s natural acidity. There’s a gentle, almost rustic hint of funk—something slightly wild or farmhouse-adjacent—that adds depth and keeps the vanilla from veering into confectionery territory. Instead of literal pound cake sweetness, the impression is more textural and aromatic: vanilla bean scraped into a dry, apple-forward base. The finish is clean, structured, and dry, with the vanilla lingering softly rather than cloying. It’s a cider that evolves as you savour it, shifting from crisp orchard fruit to something more layered and aromatic. Overall: Not an immediate dessert-cider hit, but a thoughtful, dry, and complex pour.
