I don’t normally review a Perry - but this one is superb. The nose is incredible! A full and rounded aroma awaits you with faint leather, honey, caramel and burnt oak. It’s really nice and one of the most energetic aromas I’ve ever had the pleasure to whiff up my nostrils.
The taste doesn’t disappoint either. Sure, it’s a sweet Perry (most are) and the label boasts this - but it really hits home. It’s sharp, full of zest, fizz and pleasant citrus kick. The pear just bursts through like a gunslinger booting open the doors of their local saloon.
The length is short, but it works and covers the palate down the middle leaving an interesting after taste down the sides of the tongue. This really is a delight. It’s light gold in colour with plenty of carbonation adding to the full taste experience.
Sure, it’s sweet. So if sweet isn’t your thing then you may need to look elsewhere - but I for one am a huge fan or dry ciders so when I taste a decent sweet cider I tend to recognise it - and this is one of them as there is a hint of dryness and tannins. It’s medium bodied but packs a punch.
The sharp pear taste is full of essence, peel and acidity. You’d almost be fooled into thinking - and tasting - that it was an actual apple cider.
It’s another great effort from the Barbourne Cider Company (Barbourne is an area of Worcester city, UK). I myself live in Barbourne, but this has in no way swayed my opinion in my review.
At 5.0%ABV this is a perfectly balanced and rewarding Perry worthy of its 5/5 score from me. Seek it out via their website or another outlet. It’s a Perry that could go well with salty snacks or cheese but sometimes you’re best just enjoying something on its own. Superb.
5/5.
